What is PicoSure Laser?

PicoSure is a picosecond laser technology developed by Cynosure in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Operating at a 755nm Alexandrite wavelength, PicoSure is US FDA-approved for treating various skin concerns such as pigmentation issues, melasma, sun damage, dull skin, acne scars, fine lines and open pores.

What makes the PicoSure treatment special is its ultra-short pulse duration, emitting energy bursts in the picosecond range, one trillionth of a second. This quick delivery ensures the surrounding tissue doesn't heat up, reducing the risk of skin damage. As of 2024, the effectiveness of the PicoSure 755nm Alexandrite picosecond laser is supported by 82 publications in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals– making it the world's most scientifically supported picosecond laser.

How does PicoSure Laser work?

The Picosure laser operates with incredibly short bursts of laser energy, each lasting just a trillionth of a second. This brief duration allows the energy to concentrate effectively, creating a photomechanical effect. This means the laser energy is directly converted into mechanical energy when it hits the target tissue, like melanin or tattoo pigment. These pigments are broken down into tiny fragments, which the body clears out through the lymphatic system.

Additionally, PicoSure Laser includes the patented FOCUS™ Lens Array—a diffractive lens that enables controlled injury in the skin, known as Laser-Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB). This process subsequently triggers the skin to heal itself by producing more collagen and elastin, resulting in skin rejuvenation.

What makes PicoSure Laser different from other Pico lasers?

PicoSure’s 755 nm wavelength sets it apart from all other picosecond lasers operating at the 532 nm/1064 nm wavelength. 755 nm wavelength is OPTIMAL for treating pigmentation, targeting pigmentation 50X more than blood vessels. This means faster clearance of pigmentation with less redness and bleeding after PicoSure laser treatment compared to the 532 nm/1064 nm picosecond laser treatment.

PicoSure’s Focus lens treatment uses a patented diffractive lens to concentrate laser energy up to 20 times. The intense laser energy produces Laser Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOBs) of the skin, creating microscopic areas that attract new skin cells and trigger an intense skin renewal process (proven by skin biopsy). This allows for resurfacing acne scars, fine lines, and open pores.

Advantages of 755 nm PicoSure Laser vs 1064 nm Pico Lasers

  • Quick with minimal discomfort: “lunchtime” procedure that can be performed within 30 minutes with little to no downtime. Clients can apply makeup and return to normal activity immediately with minimal redness or bleeding (compared to downtime of five to seven days after 1064 nm pico laser treatment, which causes numerous areas of pinpoint bleeding known as petechiae).
  • Effectively clears blemishes: PicoSure’s ideal 755 nm wavelength allows for precise pigment targeting and quicker results (results can be seen after two to three treatments vs four to five treatments for 1064 nm pico lasers).
  • Minimal side effects: the 755 nm laser wavelength is three times more selective for pigmentation removal than the 1064 nm wavelength, lowering the risk of complications such as laser burns, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, redness, and injury to blood vessels.

Frequently asked questions

When topical anaesthetic is applied, most patients find PicoSure Laser treatments tolerable, with a discomfort score of 2-3/10 points.
Pico laser prices range from $150-$250 per session, and mass-market-oriented clinics offer $88 first-time trials to attract new clients.
Prices of PicoSure treatments range from $400-800 per session

The main reason for this would be the high cost of the PicoSure device- this US FDA-approved device is developed and manufactured by CynoSure USA, as compared to most other Pico lasers developed and manufactured in Korea.

The clinics and medical centres using PicoSure are academic centres such as Singapore’s National Skin Center or doctor-run medical clinics that are results-driven and willing to invest in a device backed by clinical studies, even if the costs are much higher. Unlike businessmen-owned clinics that adopt a “mass market, high volume” strategy with the cheaper Korean-made PicoLasers, it is not commercially viable with the costly PicoSure laser.
Side effects are generally minimal. Right after the treatment, you might experience some redness, swelling, or minor skin irritation. Following aftercare instructions helps minimise any side effects.
Avoid sun exposure for a week and use post-laser recovery skincare. Retinols, AHAs/BHAs, and Vitamin C serums should be stopped for three days before and seven days after treatment. You can resume applying makeup right away after treatment. Post-laser recovery skincare containing stem cell-derived serums is recommended to expedite recovery and optimise results.
PicoSure laser fires a concentrated beam of laser energy that fragments tattoo ink into dust-like particles, allowing the lymphatic system to clear tattoo ink. Black, blue, and red ink can be removed effectively. Removing multicoloured tattoos and green/white/pink/yellow inks is difficult.
