PicoSure is a picosecond laser technology developed by Cynosure in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Operating at a 755nm Alexandrite wavelength, PicoSure is US FDA-approved for treating various skin concerns such as pigmentation issues, melasma, sun damage, dull skin, acne scars, fine lines and open pores.
What makes the PicoSure treatment special is its ultra-short pulse duration, emitting energy bursts in the picosecond range, one trillionth of a second. This quick delivery ensures the surrounding tissue doesn't heat up, reducing the risk of skin damage. As of 2024, the effectiveness of the PicoSure 755nm Alexandrite picosecond laser is supported by 82 publications in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals– making it the world's most scientifically supported picosecond laser.
The Picosure laser operates with incredibly short bursts of laser energy, each lasting just a trillionth of a second. This brief duration allows the energy to concentrate effectively, creating a photomechanical effect. This means the laser energy is directly converted into mechanical energy when it hits the target tissue, like melanin or tattoo pigment. These pigments are broken down into tiny fragments, which the body clears out through the lymphatic system.
Additionally, PicoSure Laser includes the patented FOCUS™ Lens Array—a diffractive lens that enables controlled injury in the skin, known as Laser-Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB). This process subsequently triggers the skin to heal itself by producing more collagen and elastin, resulting in skin rejuvenation.
PicoSure’s 755 nm wavelength sets it apart from all other picosecond lasers operating at the 532 nm/1064 nm wavelength. 755 nm wavelength is OPTIMAL for treating pigmentation, targeting pigmentation 50X more than blood vessels. This means faster clearance of pigmentation with less redness and bleeding after PicoSure laser treatment compared to the 532 nm/1064 nm picosecond laser treatment.
PicoSure’s Focus lens treatment uses a patented diffractive lens to concentrate laser energy up to 20 times. The intense laser energy produces Laser Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOBs) of the skin, creating microscopic areas that attract new skin cells and trigger an intense skin renewal process (proven by skin biopsy). This allows for resurfacing acne scars, fine lines, and open pores.
PicoSure Laser treatments effectively clear blemishes and revitalise skin safely and effectively. Conditions that can be treated with PicoSure Laser include:
The number of PicoSure sessions you’ll need depends on what you’re treating, the severity of your condition, and how your skin responds to the treatment.
